What Remains is set a generation after nuclear collapse, where scattered survivors gather around the Compound, a fortified trainyard with working water, repaired rails, and just enough light to suggest civilization might endure.
Life around the Compound
There's a hush in the old world now. The roads are empty. The cities are quiet. Survivors gather around the Compound, a fortified trainyard with working water, repaired rails and just enough light to suggest that civilization might endure.
In What Remains, you start with worn clothes and empty hands, with $200. You take dangerous jobs, scavenge crafting materials, develop talents, make weapons and armour, recover vehicles, trade with other players and contribute supplies to rebuild Compound.
Rebuilding and progression
Everyone in the Compound is asked to help decide what to rebuild, and what to defend. Supplies can be contributed to the Compound's shared Workshop, Armoury, Infirmary, Trading Post, Bank, Railway, and Walls.
- Dangerous jobs. Take work that pays and pushes you beyond the safety of the Compound.
- Scavenging. Recover crafting materials needed for equipment and rebuilding.
- Crafting. Make weapons and armour from the resources you bring back.
- Recovery and trade. Recover vehicles and trade with other players.
Beyond the rails
Ride the Railway into Ash Flats, Saltbreak, Deadwood, and Ironfall, where changing conditions affect the risks awaiting you.
Outside the Compound, you can follow the branching Adventures, fight through Campaigns, raid bandit camps, organize your own multiplayer Expeditions, compete in the Arena, hunt bounties, claim businesses, and more with your Cash at the Card Den and Racetrack.
Crews, conflict, and permanent loss
Survivors can form Crews with their own identity, treasury, and history, but there is no guarantee of safety even in an alliance. What Remains is a persistent PvPvE world Where choices have consequences, equipment is valuable, ammunition is scarce and death is permanent.
Everyone living in the Compound has a say in what is rebuilt, what is defended, and what remains.
