A character upgrade can begin with a fight, a crafting recipe, or a trade with another player. Ashbound connects those activities in a persistent dark fantasy world built around skills, equipment, exploration, and guilds.
Developed by Battle Scar Games, Ashbound is a free-to-play, text-based MMORPG. It is available in web browsers and on Android, with a world presented through text, illustrations, and interactive menus.
Building a character through play
Players develop their characters through activities such as gathering, crafting, exploration, and combat. Skills, equipment, and professions provide different goals to work toward, whether that means improving a combat build or learning to produce useful items.
Active combat gives players direct choices during an encounter. Attacks, abilities, items, and defensive actions determine what a character attempts, while a combat log records the results.
Checking equipment and available resources becomes part of preparing for the next fight. The text-based format keeps these decisions visible: what to train, which equipment to use, and which activity to tackle next.
Crafting and trading with a purpose
Gathering and crafting connect character progression to the economy. Materials collected during play can become equipment, consumables, or goods to sell, and crafting recipes give players specific resources to work toward.
The player marketplace supports buying and selling between players, with buy orders providing another way to obtain materials or equipment. Someone preparing for an upgrade might gather the ingredients themselves, craft what they need, or purchase an item from another player.
- Gather. Collect materials directly during play.
- Craft. Turn resources into equipment, consumables, or other goods.
- Trade. Use the marketplace or buy orders to obtain materials or equipment.
- Sell. Convert materials into currency to help fund a purchase.
These choices give resources several possible uses. Selling materials can help fund a purchase, while keeping them can move a crafting project closer to completion.
Exploration, raids, and shared threats
Ashbound's regions contain activities, enemies, resources, and tasks to discover. Expeditions offer further opportunities for exploration, while party raids provide challenges to tackle with other players.
Public threats introduce shared objectives, and the world's event systems also include Titans, invasions, and planar rifts. These activities give players reasons to look beyond their next individual upgrade and consider what is happening around them.
A session might involve gathering materials for a recipe, preparing equipment for an encounter, or joining a party for a raid. The different systems provide several ways to pursue progress within the same character.
Guilds, PvP, and Open Beta
Guilds bring players together through shared projects and stronghold development. Members can contribute resources and coordinate their activities around goals that benefit the group.
PvP, bounties, and guild conflict provide a competitive side to the game. Housing, farming, and companions offer additional projects, while achievements and titles mark progress across different activities.
Alongside improving equipment, players can work on a home, develop a profession, or contribute to their guild's next project. Ashbound remains in active development, and content, balance, and interfaces continue to change during Open Beta.
Player feedback helps identify bugs, unclear systems, and areas that need improvement. The game is free to play, requires account registration, and offers optional purchases.
